She was climbing up the side of a 2 1/2' dog fence
and waking us up every night. I know... she's amazing...
but that had to stop!
I tried the store bought fences and gates...
she either climbed over the top or broke through.
Tried the crate... no luck.
I decided to build a fence myself...
this way it could be high enough (I hope) and sturdy.
I toe-nailed together 2x4 pieces of wood and attached metal screening with heavy duty staples and screws with washers at each corner and at the center top and bottom...
I stained the wood with a vinegar and
steel wool solution then added a little number bling...
after all, if I have to have a dog fence in my kitchen
it should look nice.

ReplyDeleteI saw your Jack Russell pop up in my google reader and I had to swing by and leave a comment! I had a Jack Russell for years...just loved her, but man, she was a jumper! We couldn't keep her penned in anywhere! We called her Houdini(sp?)dog because she'd get out of everything including a 5ft tall fenced yard we constructed for her. We spent all weekend making it and we put her in and she promptly jumped over the top! We ended up having to put a roof on it.
ReplyDeleteThey are such intelligent dogs... she always knew what we were saying to her. Maybe when my kids are older and I have more energy, I can get another one :)

Awesome! Beautiful solution! I can't believe she can get over your obstacles. We seriously used "gate" for a Christmas tree scene (probably 4" high) and our doxie would not go over it. lol! Hoping this pretty gate solves your problem! :)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful gate.. I too, had to put a fence up in the kitchen area to keep the dogs from breaking out every time the door opened. Imagine a JRT, a Rat Terrier & a 70# pittie all running at you...lol.. After seeing your fancy gate, I'm going to redo ours - because you shamed me ;)

ReplyDeleteWe had a Cairn who didn't like being gated, so he chewed the the entire side of a wall and pushed the gate through the doorway so he could make his way out of the kitchen. (the house didn't have cased out doorways) When I got home from work, he met me at the door with his face full of what I deemed to be white flour, but I couldn't figure out how he could possibly have gotten into the cupboard where I kept the package of flour. Little did I know until I entered the kitchen that it was drywall dust from a ginormous whole in the wall! What a little dickens.... Funny- that really WAS his name!

ReplyDeleteI have a Jack Russell too (7 months) and I use my old baby fence! Luckily I found it at my mother's house and brought it home. So, she has a "vintage fence" now, haha.

ReplyDeleteIt is attached to the wall with large eye screws so it can easily be removed, though it is a little heavy and awkward. I can slide it out the door onto the deck if needed.

I agree,...she is plotting and figuring as we speak!! I hate to be a "Negative Nellie", but I can just see her little toes using that wire mesh just like steps on a ladder to get to freedom!! You did a great job of constructing the panel, and it looks way cute with your decorative touches. Let us know how long it takes for the Prison Break to happen.

DeleteLove the fence! I actually made one, although not nearly as nice as yours to keep our dog out of our dining room and she lasted about a week as well. We tried a number of things and ended up having to use an electronic barrier that worked with her dog fence outside, so she just wore her dog fence collar all the time. We did lots of training, took a couple of months and we now haven't even had the barrier on for 6 months and she doesn't go in the room.

Hello! I thought I'd ask how well your fence is holding up? I currently have an old French door on its side, wedged across a doorway. Not pretty. I have lots of fencing and think your idea is nice and clean. I, however, have 3 dogs of varying ingenuity and size. One's a Korgie-ish/Spaniel type who lifts the fence outside, lets the others out, then puts the fence back. She also chews through drywall to get to the other side. The other two, a foster Pug and foster Chihuahua (oh, the noise!) are followers, but if the hole is big enough? They're through it.
