Using an Old Table to Create a Potting Bench

This old table is getting a makeover...

It has been about 3 different colors since I owned it and at one time it opened into a long table but I never owned the leaves so I took out the guts and sealed it closed.

My plan is to create a potting bench from this old table by adding shelves on both the top and bottom for planting accessories.

I painted the original table green then began creating a back shelf using assorted pieces of reclaimed and new wood, wood glue, nails, screws and brackets.

Using more reclaimed wood I attached supports under the table and created a pallet style shelf for the bottom of the potting bench.

The next step was to paint the entire piece a light mossy green so all the repurposed pieces I used in this project matched.

I stained the pallet shelf on the bottom and a repurposed drawer front I'm using for the top shelf with a Kona water based Poly-stain.

This stain has a poly in it to protect the shelves from wear and tear.

I added a towel rack to the front to hang tools and towels.

This was a great repurpose for this old table and can be used inside or outdoors.

I'm thinking potting bench but it would also make a great deck table for entertaining.

And now I have a new potting bench and one more broken table
from my stash is repurposed.

  4. That is one heck of a re-purpose, love it. The color and what you've made that table into are so incredible. What an awesome job you did on that old table. I thought table was pretty before you started, that beaded trim gave it nice dash.
We just made 6 drawer dresser into tv stand. It's ok but feel like it needs little something added to it for some panache. Think when we go into town will look at some trim like that beading on your table. Living room is cottage so think that trim would add something to stand.
Besides painting dresser, hubs took 2 top drawers out, replaced with shelf for dvd player, then added 3" casters for easier moving and little industrial look. Also added new drawer knobs. Think will use drawers for shelves, no sense wasting.
So love your potting bench will be looking at tables differently, have table in shed would be good candidate for redo thanks to your inspiration.. Happy week
