My Valentine mantel is a mixture of rusty hardware,
reclaimed wood and a lot of LOVE.

Fall Decorating & Mantel

My Fall mantel started out with a little
project in the shop first then a few pieces from
a discarded piano...

Wall Mantel

The pieces of a broken antique piano
I found one morning turned
out to be so much fun to create with...

I knew this piece had potential right away...

A Sailboat & A Mantel

First today I want to thank
Cheri for her sailboat inspiration...

and then I want to show you mine...

I made these from authentic driftwood
found on the beach... by me.

I screwed the mast into the boat, added a piece of hanger for the boom, then using an old piece of curtain, I slid the wire through the hem and tied the top with a knot.
The top knot even looks like a little pennant.

I put these lovely sailboats on my
mantel along with some other found beach treasures...

An old fishing weight...

An old authentic Marseille knot,
painted shells, and beach sand..

an old fisherman to watch over the sea...

and an old metal "something" that I found
at a garage sale and turned into
a mirrored porthole with a salty old rope found on the beach...

All together they made a great
summer sailing mantel...

Rustic Summer Mantel

My summer mantel...

Brought to you by garage sales, thrift stores and clearance sales...

A tree here...

Some coral there....

A guy named Old Salty stands guard near an old pulley...

Rusty water caps make stands for vintage travel ad candles...

A distressed white swan sits among the rusty pieces,
coral and a painted white frame...

Rustic and ready for summer!

Sand Dollar Garland

Pottery Barn had a beautiful sand dollar garland
hanging over one of their headboards.

Here is how I made my own version...

Susan's Shiny Sea Shells

Say that three times fast...

Did you check out PB's silver shells?
Well I'm trying this one for myself...
I started with pretty shells from my collection...
(you can even use ugly ones)

I gave them a shot of metallic spray paint...
(any metallic will do, mine is silvery)

I was amazed at the transformation!
Especially if some of your shells are a little chippy...

They almost look like sterling silver...
(a great idea for some of you jewelry makers out there...)
They look beautiful on my rusty mantel...

Or in a jar with sea glass and a sailboat.

I even gave some in little gift bags with tags to my
teacher friends wishing them a "shiny summer".

A quick and easy project with beautiful results!
