The Best Gift

Sometimes little things happen
that make you know you're doing a good job as a parent.
For me, that happened at Christmas time one year.

As the mother of 4 daughters,
there are times ya just gotta wonder.... are they turning out alright?

Am I giving my best advice? Are they getting any of this?

At Christmas one year my youngest daughter, who was 13 at the time, waited until Christmas Eve to shop for her "sister presents".

She had an idea... she wanted to get her big sister a scarf.

Not just any scarf...
it had to be a striped infinity scarf because she knew that is exactly what her sister wanted.

Well, being Christmas Eve she ended up having to buy a regular striped scarf and asked me if I could sew it together for her. At the time I was busy with something else and I told her that her sister would surely like it the way it was.

I told her to just wrap it and get it under the tree.

Little did I know until the next morning when the opening began, that my daughter had grabbed a needle and thread and sewed the scarf together herself. This was one of her first attempts at sewing. She gave it a try because she knew how much her sister wanted to open an infinity scarf on Christmas.

The results are well, a little rough... but don't you know...
her big sister proudly wore that scarf to school the first day back!

I couldn't have been prouder of both of them...
That scarf was truly a gift from my youngest daughter's heart and for the first time ever, it didn't matter to her big sister if it was "cool" enough or not.

The thoughtful gift my daughter gave this year was
infinitely bigger than a scarf to me.

  3. That's really sweet.
To this day, my sister still gives the best Christmas gifts. This year, she went back to a store we had been in together to get a simple copper bracelet that I had ooohed and ahhhed over. :) And I LOVE IT. I especially love how well she knows me and how it isn't any thing for her to go out of her way to do something for me. Sisters are awesome (as an adult - Ha!) and your girls will be be so thankful to have each other, the older they get.

  5. I smiled.... from the opening knowing the little things tell you that the job you're doing is good, all the way till the end. Because the end told you that the job you're doing is good too.
