Repurposed Porch Sign

An easy DIY distressed porch sign using a new kitchen cabinet door...

A friend gave me a pile of new kitchen cabinet doors and my eyes lit up.... signs!

The doors were all new looking with a perfect finish so getting them to my rustic taste was going to take some work.

I began by painting the door with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in Old Ochre.

I printed out the words on my computer and transferred them onto the door. You can read about that process in my other Welcome to the Porch tutorial.

Then using a Sharpie paint stick I filled in the letters. I used a thin marker to trace the letters and a fat marker to fill them in.

When the paint dried overnight I sanded the lettering and the door edges in every direction.

I mixed clear wax with dark wax to give the sign a layer of protection and an aged look.

The new cabinet door is now a rustic porch sign in a few easy steps.

If your sign is going to be in direct sunlight or out in the elements you should use an outdoor sealer instead of wax.
