Rustic Wooden Milk and Cream Tray

I'm playing around in my workshop today looking to build something from the scrap wood in my pile.

I've really loved building and selling rustic trays made from pallet wood these days.

I made Hot Cocoa Christmas trays and Red Rustic Trays over the holidays using Old Sign Stencils by Funky Junk Interiors.

Today I'm using just scraps from the shop to create a smaller rustic tray for everyday farmhouse decor.

I found a pressure treated 1"x 1" square spindle and a piece of 1" x 10" shelving.

I cut the spindle the width of the shelving piece and attached one piece to each end of the board using nails and wood glue.

I painted the tray white and added simple, inexpensive cabinet handles from Home Depot.

The next step was to choose a stencil. I have tons of fabulous stencils in my stash right now.

Here is a peek at how I store them.

Each stencil is hung from a plastic skirt hanger and then hung from a pipe in my basement workshop.

They are easy to see and the perfect place to put them back even wet.

As you can see I'm not big on cleaning my stencils and I've never had a problem with that.

The stencil I chose for this tray today was the Milk and Cream stencil sold by Angie at Knick of Time.

Angie sells great stencils and has a gorgeous blog full of farmhouse beauty.

I sprayed the back of the stencil with spray adhesive, I always use spray adhesive, I think it creates a seal and there is little or no paint leakage under the stencil.

I use a foam pouncer to apply the paint in very thin coats.

When I lifted the stencil the image was great!

The next step was to sand the edges and across the top of the tray to create a distressed look.

The final step is a spray sealer to prevent staining from coffee or tea.

This tray is the perfect size for a tea party.

The best part is it cost so little to make.

Here is another fun tray I made using a stencil and my Silhouette Machine.

The cool handles are from DLawless Hardware
