Choosing the Right Paint for a Damaged Kitchen Hutch

Probably one of the most challenging pieces I've ever done...

An estate sale find from my neighborhood...

A twenty five dollar price tag and well worth it... or so I thought at first sight.

When I got home, the work involved was a different story.

It seems that the doors didn't close tight because the sides were loose. They needed a session with wood glue and a rubber mallet.

Apparently this piece spent a lot of time in a kitchen... need I say more?

My initial thought for painting this piece was to use Chalk Paint® but as I cleaned, and cleaned again, and cleaned one more time... I realized that Chalk Paint® was too porous and grease might absorb into the paint.

One way to fix grease spots is to use Bulls Eye Shellac over the spots and repaint.

I decided to repaint the hutch with Fusion Mineral Paint instead of using the shellac this time.

Fusion colors are non-toxic, lead free, virtually odorless and have zero volatile organic compounds (VOC), plus it contains no ammonia or formaldehyde.

The best part is that there is no waxing needed. The Fusion paint will seal the wood, which is exactly what I needed for this piece.

This color is gorgeous!

The outside is painted in Casement White Fusion Mineral Paint.  It is bright white and beautiful... and notice... no grease marks!

Fusion Mineral Paint was the absolute right choice for this piece of furniture. The hutch has been brought back to life with new knobs, a little TLC, and a fresh coat of paint!
