IKEA Cart Mini Island
I don't know what other people do when they can't sleep and wake up at 5:00 am but here's what I did Saturday morning...
My plain IKEA cart never looked as good as it does right now! I've had mine for years and it looked like this...
Nice green color but hey, I have nothing else to do this early, I've already had 2 cups of coffee, so how about painting it white?
Now how about the top?
Then I began beating it with a hammer to distress it...
I wanted to duplicate the look of an old antique bread board I have, it has nail holes on the sides that look very rustic.
I can do that!
Then I mixed black and brown paint with an antiquing glaze.
The black paint filled in the hammer marks very nicely!
Next came my inspiration piece... a stamp from the
I wanted to only use the black cancellation stamp.
I traced a circle, then used Stayzon stamp pad and stamps
and the top was finished!
Back to the base, I distressed the white edges with a sander,
I painted an inexpensive towel bar with metallic spray paint and added it to the side.
Gorgeous, gorgeous! I love it!
I really need to wake up early more often.

Susan, that looks wonderful! I think the best creative ideas come when you can't sleep ~ whether late at night or early in the a.m. The cart itself is really neat, too. I love the things you added to the sides. This size would actually work in my kitchen and I love that it is on wheels to move out of the way if need be. The fact that you could paint it and personalize it to your tastes is another plus!
ReplyDeleteYep! It's gorgeous. I love all the special touches you added to it especially the stamp.
ReplyDeleteThis looks fabulous! Very, very cool.
ReplyDeleteSusan it looks amazing, I'm still not sure how you applied the stamp. Did you paint the ink onto the design? It's amazing!I would put it in the kitchen as an island it looks sooooo pretty. The combination of the rustic wood and the white are gorgeous.

I love it! It looks so cool and unique instead of cookie-cutter big-box. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I missed it, but I'd love to know more about the stain on top and ( I think I read you mixed black and brown with antique stain) the stamp. Can you elaborate on these a bit more. I am so making one of these!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI loved this so very much that I had to try it myself - I took a couple of photos and wrote down what I did and even though my final product doesn't look quite as great as yours, this was so much fun to do! Thanks for the inspiration!!

Olá!!! Parabéns o seu blog é maravilhoso!!!
ReplyDeleteSeus trabalhos são perfeitos e muito inspiradores!!!
beijooo
Saw this on Pinterest & loved it!! Thanks for posting it! I'm going to make it & put it in my laundry room as a folding station! How did you use the Stazon ink for the circle?? I can't figure out how to apply it in a thin line from the stamp pad!
ReplyDeleteThe circle is just black paint :) Sorry so late on the answer!
DeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this so much!! I know it was quite a few months ago you did this but I wonder if you could elaborate on how you did the stamp detail? I've just managed to source a cart and can't wait to try this out but think I could do with some of your wisdom as to how you created it!
Many thanks
Hi Anonymous... I'd love to help but your settings are on "no reply" so I can not email back to you... Let me just say that I used a bowl to make the circle, painted around it and used stamps for the letters and numbers inked with Stayz On inkpad...
ReplyDeleteIt was easy!
Susan
Hi Susan, thanks for replying to Anonymous! I'm a newbie and have no idea about the settings but I think I could make a good stab at the stamping given your description above, thanks ever so much! Anita
ReplyDeleteThis looks PHENOMENAL!! What a wonderful transformation. It looks like a real quality piece of furniture now. Great job! I am your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteI've had my eye on that cart for quite a while! I LOVE your painted version and now I REALLY REALLY want that cart! Thanks for sharing :)

ReplyDeleteI love the stamp on the table. I have been wanting to try this too. Very creative!! I hope you will stop by and join my new blog. It's all about farm life, decorating, cooking, animals, and more.
ReplyDeleteWow. What kind of coffee do YOU drink!
ReplyDelete~Bliss~
Susan, this is awesome! I love it! I would never have thought to add all those wonderful features...it really turned out great!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. I have the very same trolley and have been wanting to vamp it up - now I'm totally inspired. thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteWow - just found this via Pinterest and I love it - thanks so much for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI just purchased an unfinished kitchen cart, was just going to throw a coat of boring ol' paint over it. So glad I found your post!
ReplyDeleteIs there any reason to use mixture of black and brown paint on the top rather than a wood stain? Thanks for the inspiration!
Wood stain is fine, I just went a different route :)
DeleteCan you please give more tips for the white paint and the antique glaze on top as your instructions were very vague? I would have no clue what to buy to make this. Thanks very much
ReplyDeleteSorry for the vagueness Vanessa.... The antique glaze is something you buy in a bottle at Michaels. You can get a little bottle in the paint aisle. I mixed a little squirt of it into the paint I was using (in a little dish). It thinks the paint without making it watery, kind of like a hand cream consistency.... When it was all mixed I just painted it on.
DeleteHope that is clear enough.
Susan
Ahh! I love it! I am actually about to do this same thing! I have the cart and the paint and also a finish for the top that I'm going to use. I was wondering though if you sanded it before you painted it the first time? Also... Did you prime it? Sorry, I'm a little new at this whole furntiture redo thing and would love your input because your's turned out amazing!!! Thanks!! :D
ReplyDelete-Kay
Hi Kay I didn't prime it I just painted it with latex paint.
Deletethis is beautiful! can you talk a little more about how you painted the top? What kind of paints did you use? Did you mix the 2 paints and the glaze all together then paint it as one or did you layer it? Thank you going to try this tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteHi Korina, Hope you see this... Yes I mixed the paints together then dry brushed a little more with the black to give it more of a rustic look. The top was butcher block to begin with so the different woods took the homemade stain in different ways. Good luck!
DeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteHi, I love the cart! What kind of paint did you use?
Thanks Bethanne
Latex but I have since repainted the bottom to keep it clean and I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in white. It goes over anything!
DeleteFantastic job! Really like the outcome ... thinking of refinishing a similar piece for the beach house. Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteHi! Just wondering if you did anything else to the top to make it safe for food use? Or are you not using it in the kitchen? I just bought this cart, and went searching for inspiration... I was so delighted to find this, I love it! Just needing to make sure I can make the top safe for food use...
ReplyDeleteI do not use mine for food so it didn't matter but I did use Polycrylic which I was told by the manufacturer is food safe.
DeleteI found so many projects that I liked here!
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower,
Deb@LakeGirlPaints
Thanks Deb! Love yours too!
DeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI am going to do this to mine also. Just not understanding exactly what you used on the top. Could I just use a dark stain?
You can certainly use dark stain. I didn't have any at the time so I made my own using brown and black paint watered down.
DeleteGreat job! It looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteI am new to the crafting/decor world so I was wondering how you did the stamp. Everyone else seems to understand how you did this so easily.
ReplyDeleteHi Micky.
DeleteI used a big bowl and traced it to make a circle on the top. Then I used letter and number rubber stamps to stamp the words around the inside of the circle. I went back and used a very thin paintbrush with black paint to paint around the traced circle and that was it :)
Hope this helps you and thank you!
Susan
Thanks for the instructions, Susan. That does help. Good job!
DeleteHi! Sorry for the late question.... What stamps did you use? I found the stayzon stamp pad but can't find the actual rubber stamps? Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteMary the stamps were found in Michaels... letters and numbers.
DeleteIts a fabulous idea
ReplyDeleteLove this! Thanks for the inspiration! I really liked the metal towel bar and started looking for a wrought iron one, but they're so expensive! I have to know, where did you get the hardware for the cart, specifically the towel bar?
ReplyDeleteHi Jen
DeleteMost of my "parts" I find at garage sales or thrift stores. I do a lot of business with dlawlesshardware.com Give them a try they have great prices!
I had to laugh at the 5 am inspiration. Mine usually comes at 3 am but I cannot bring myself to get out of bed at that time. Did you wake anyone during the pounding? Amazing work. Because of your post I finally found a place for my bottle opener.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! Actually I take a lot of flack around here for making way too much tool noise too early in the morning... lol. Oh well I'm having fun!
Delete
