Pergola Wood Toolbox... My First Build!

Here it is... the real deal!
I worked on it all day today, from scratch!

I had this wood in the garage... funny story.... One day
I saw this old weathered wood on the side of the road!
Great find! I thought....

I pulled over, put about 10 boards in my
car and drove home... When I got home and took out the wood I realized it was from an old pergola that someone took down...

Great find!
Except... that it had termite holes all over it!
Now if you know anything about termites, you know that you don't want them on your property... They eat your house!

Almost (yes almost) all of the wood went to the curb.
A couple of pieces that had that great pergola cut in the wood...
I had to have it, I checked it really carefully
and didn't see any termites, so fingers crossed, I'm using it today!

I love the shape of the wood!

I started out by cutting the pieces I needed, thanks to
 Donna's great directions...
(see Donna... I do have a jigsaw)

Notice the professional work bench...
(Yes, the chair is still in one piece)
Once I had all the pieces cut, I drilled 2 holes for the handle.

Then I began assembling the box.

I gave the whole thing a good sanding with the
palm sander to even out my rough edges...
Then I painted it white.

And added some numbers that I painted with
bronze metallic paint.

Then I added the handle...

Yep, that's a crowbar...

And ta-dah! I made a tool box from scratch today...

It was a lot of fun and I love the way it turned out!
I think I'll make a few hundred more!

  1. The tool box looks great, love the crowbar handle!

I never think of checking for termites, eekk, I always just get to excited over a great find and only worry as to why no one else wanted it after!

  2. thats adorable. the little holes only add to the character of the piece..and the crowbar is genius!

  3. Hahaha! You're awesome. :) Your ending sentence I could so relate to! I want to make a bazillion more now too. The crowbar is way cool! Nicely done, girl. :) Proud of you!!

  4. Horray for you!!! Looks great...I'll take one too please ;) Chat soon, Laurel

  5. Yes you did! I envy you girls that can build stuff. Not for me - but I'm way impressed.

  6. I saw Donna's challenge, but I've been too busy on other things :(. I really like your pergola tool box. The white paint and numbers really give it extra style.

  7. Your toolbox has officially pushed me over the top...loved Donna's drill handle, loved the branch handle, but didn't make one. Yours with the crowbar handle plus the numbers (especially the numbers) now has me searching through my wood stash. Thanks for the push!

  8. Looks really, really cool. Very creative. What type/brand of paint did you use? I'm considering painting my old weathered wood fence white to brighten up my shady back yard.

  9. Fabulous job on this as well! Love the crowbar handle! :) Thanks for linking this up as well!
