Rustic Antique Crate for Flowers

Back in the corner of my basement I found an old,
antique crate that is perfect for this project.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very cool crate but I need to fix it up a little bit. The nails are the original, they are very old and the crate is honestly ready to fall apart. I'm helping it out by adding a little wood glue and my nail gun to secure the sides.
It is also time for Ten on the Tenth and the theme this month is Mother's Day gifts. Wouldn't this be a great way to give Mom a gift of beautiful flowers?!

Adding a rustic handle to a crate.

I added handles to the sides then gave the front of the crate a quick stenciling. It was so quick that I didn't even take pics of the process. I used a DecoArt Americana Decor stencil called Botanical.

I used dark green paint for the leaf and then a black to stencil the berry design on the wood.

I gave the crate a coat of hemp oil wood finish to protect the very dried out wood from more damage.

Flowers look beautiful in this old antique crate with the new design and any Mother would love it! If you're interested you can read all about why I began using crates for my plants this year... the answer lies with our new four legged friend.

  1. Adorable. You had me at "back at the corner in my basement". I'd love to have a basement full of treasures like this. The handle is darling.

  2. Hi Susan this is truly a darling crate! it works with any garden decor.

  3. That is a great crate and looks lovely with the flowersf

  4. Susan I would love to receive this crate with flowers. I love how you put this gift together and shared the idea with us. Great gift idea ever! HAPPY MOTHER'S DAYS!

  5. Love this old crate! You were so smart to keep this and re-purpose it for a fantastic Mother's Day gift. I'd love to have this on my front porch with a pot or two of petunias or impatiens flourishing inside! Love those handles and the stenciling adds a little color! Great idea for $10 on the 10th!

  6. Love your old crate and how you've upscaled it, Susan! Very pretty now!! I love the contrast between really rustic and what's put inside. Your Mother's Day flowers look lovely! Thanks for the great ideas for redoing a box. We have a couple of wine boxes which fell apart sitting in storage and during the move to Texas ~ will have to do something similar.

Happy Mother's Day to you and happy to be with you for 10 on the 10th,
    Barb :)

  7. Susan, I love this idea! You have inspired me to repurpose an old crate that I've got! Love the look! Happy Mother's Day! Hugs!

  10. Very pretty, Susan! Happy Mother's Day to you!

  11. I found a similar box at an estate sale a few years ago and I love using it for flowers and holiday decor. It's a keeper for sure. I like the idea of using hemp oil.
