Seaside Find

Usually my treasures come from the side of the road
but this one...
comes form the side of the sea...

Knowing how much I love old wood, my youngest daughter came home from the beach the other day with a very weathered piece of redwood that she found on the beach...

She knew I'd like it!

And I sure did!

I cut the wood into pieces and screwed them together....

The wood was beautifully weathered!
I added a piece as a bottom and matched the color with paint...

When the box was put together I stenciled on the word "port"
and then heavily sanded it to distress the word.

"Port" because it was found by the sea...

I ended up with a simple but beautiful box for flowers
that reminds me of my thoughtful youngest daughter.

She sure knows what her Mom likes!...

A Great Impulse Buy!

I was making my weekly trek to the
neighborhood Salvation Army...

And as I pulled up there was a big truck outside.
They were loading or unloading furniture, I couldn't tell which...
I spied this big thing with a lot of architectural charm looking like it was being taken off the truck....

It looked like white oak and it had beautiful carvings....
 the thing was massive

I quickly asked if they were selling it but at that point had
no idea what it was that I wanted to buy...

The manager said, "Yes, how about $25.00?".... but I'd have to hurry because it was going on this truck right now....

Ok! I'll take it!

15 minutes later....

Here it is in my garage...
it weighs about 100 lbs and is 7' tall and 6' wide!!...

(There was no way I was sneaking this thing in the house...)

And here it is in my living room....

We have this big opening between the living room where
we watch TV and the rest of the noisy house,
we tried to block off the room with a curtain....

But how great is this!!!

Luckily I spoke up fast or this baby would be on it's way to
"who knows where" on a truck....

Sometimes it pays to speak up!

Update:
According to my sister-in-law, it was upside-down (duh!).
I flipped it over and it looks even better with the
heavy molding on the bottom!
I think she's right!

Annie Sloan Prize & Bed Tray

I was the winner of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint giveaway at

364 entries and they picked me!
How psyched was I? I was going to buy some anyway!
and I won it! For free!

Well my packaged arrived today!

And as soon as I ripped open the box...

I wanted to try it!

Soon I plan on doing a table re-do tutorial...
but for right now I'm starting out small to see if this paint
is as amazing as everyone says it is...

I found this little table at the thrift store...
pretty ugly but $2 and it had potential...

I started out by painting it with the new chalk paint...
my color choice for this prize was Old White...

It went on really smooth and dried almost instantly...
I felt like I was painting with heavy cream.
So far, so good....

When it was dry I traced on a design using carbon paper
 and an image from the

Next I tried something new... I used a black paint stick to
fill in the design instead of a brush and paint...

It worked great!

Next I sanded and distressed the whole piece...

Note:
when they say you should do this part outdoors, they aren't kidding! The dust that comes off is like a powder.

It sanded beautifully and came out as smooth as glass!

The paint stick distressed beautifully too...

Then I applied the clear wax...
I used a rag and it went on so smoothly!
I was super impressed by the wax...
I thought waxing was going to be the hard part.
I've waxed furniture before, it was hard wax
and took a lot of elbow grease.

Annie Sloan's wax went on like butter!

I added a handle on each side...

And now I have myself a very awesome bed tray...

I'm thrilled with this paint and wax!
The only problem I could find... was that now I want
more colors and the dark wax too....

Thank you Michell from Girl in Air and thank you
Shades of Amber for supplying the paint...
you'll be hearing from me!
