How to Make a Demijohn with Macrame

Today I'm attempting to make a knock off project
of a beautiful demijohn.

bottle with string macrame

I was the macrame champion of 1977.

Not really but I did macrame all day long back then.

Here's a great antique bottle that is going to my next attempt at macrame.

First I wrapped the waxed string around the spout about 5 times.

Then I hitched on about 10 lengths of string, they should be about three times the length of the bottle.

Make square knots tying together 2 pieces of string, one from the left and one from the right.

Move over to the next two pieces, and keep going around the bottle.

Make your knots farther apart as you get to the wider part of the bottle.

When you get to the bottom, pull your knots tight again.

And end your pieces of string with tight knots.

This was really not that hard to do,

especially if you were the macrame queen of 1977!

Give it a try!

And check out this Antique Demijohn I found at a
thrift store!

  8. Great job! Hey, I used to do macrame. I should be able to handle this - but that would mean actually doing something. LOL

  9. Gosh! thanks for posting the "how to" of doing that...it looks so complicated to do but you made it seem "do-able". I never learned how to macrame but I sure do remember those hanging flower pot holders that everyone had (was that popular in the 1970's?).

  15. Well, shut the front door! This is super-clever! Now I just have to find a really cool bottle. I'm a new follower and can't wait to see what other "cleverness" you have going on. I'm not as clever as you, but if you want to follow back, that would be fun!

  21. Yours looks JUST like Ballards - it's actually SO much better because you did it yourself! I love it! I remember the whole macrame craze of the 70s also - I distinctly remember making a macrame plant hanger with the twine hanging from my roommate's upper bunk while I worked on it. Back then there was no internet, let alone BLOGS! We've come a long way!
