How to Make a Chippy Ladder

I'm so excited to show you the chippy ladder I made one very snowy weekend.

This project began with an old piece of trellis a friend had given me.

It sat in my backyard all summer getting more and more distressed and chippy.

My husband was ready to throw it out when I grabbed it and saved it from the garbage.

He is notorious for throwing things out!

You can hear all about that sad story by following this link

Old chippy trellis

This piece was definitely broken but I knew it had a lot of potential.

The first thing I did was to take apart the trellis.

Now it really looked like it needed to go in the trash!

When all the slats were removed I was left with these 2 pieces.

Two chippy boards

I cut a bunch of the slats to 16" long.

(perfectly chippy)

On the end of each slat I drilled a hole.

I attached each length of chippy wood to the supports with screws.

(see where I'm going with this?)

When my new ladder was finished I coated the chippy paint with Fusion Mineral Paint Tough Coat Sealer.

The sealer will keep the chippy paint from chipping anymore.

Chippy is adorable but nobody wants to constantly clean up paint chips!

Distressed and chippy ladder

I am so excited about this ladder!

Not only was this trellis saved from the trash, but it turned out to be an awesome decorative piece to hang blankets or fabric!
