Rocking Chair With Grain Sack Cushion

A sad little rocker gets a much needed make-over...

It is always amazing what a little paint can do...

by Annie Sloan, I was able to paint right over
the existing white paint with no sanding or priming.

The first coat was a little scary, the color
looked a little too bright for me... And can I
tell you what a pain it is painting spindles?

After another coat of paint and a couple coats of clear wax,
the color darkened to a beautiful shade of navy blue.

The next thing this little beauty needed was a chair cushion.

Using drop cloth fabric and painter's tape,
I painted stripes to resemble grain sack across the fabric.

I made a pattern for the chair cushion using newspaper...

I drew the pattern onto thick batting (that I removed from a cushion we no longer used)
and cut it out.

The custom made cushion fit perfectly
onto the seat of the rocking chair, and the grain sack stripes
are just the right touch.

The make-over for this rocker is complete!

I love the color and design of this rocker and
I would use it in my own home in a second...

But this little upgraded beauty is going to school with me and will
be the new "teacher chair" in my classroom.

Many a children's story will be read from this rocker.
