Creating a Farmhouse Style Dish Rack

I pulled over for a very interesting find recently...

I wasn't exactly sure what it was when I found it because it was getting dark but I pulled over and threw it in the trunk. It looked to me like it was the perfect piece to give a little farmhouse kitchen style.

When I got home I discovered that it was actually a cabinet piece that was probably a built-in to hold dishes in a kitchen. It had a bead board backing and wooden spindles.

It is a very rustic piece, made of pine with very rough cuts,
no fine carpentry here but I liked it and knew it had potential.
The first thing I thought was that it needed to be a little taller.

I built an apron around the base then added legs that were leftover from another project.

All it needed now was a coat of paint to unify the whole piece. I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Duck Egg.

I painted the word MARKET on the front apron. Now there is a stencil for that you could use to make your life a little easier. You can find the Farmer's Market stencil by visiting this bold link.

For this project however, I printed the word MARKET on the computer, rubbed pencil on the back, then traced over the letters onto the wood.

I hand painted in the word MARKET with white paint and distressed it with sandpaper. When the piece was finished I sealed it with a coat of clear wax.

The bottom well of this piece is the perfect place for a platter or a large bowl.

The top spindles hold plates beautifully.

On the front I hung an old rusty hook to hold a tea towel.

That "interesting find" from the side of the road turned into the perfect little hutch to hold plates, platters,
and large bowls.

I put it on Craig's List and it now has a new home
with someone that absolutely loved it!
