Bronze Repurposed Cupboard Door Planter

I was completely inspired by a recent garden site email.

Cutting a repurposed cabinet door.

The email site featured a bronze wall plaque with a half of a metal pot attached to the front for plants. It was then that I decided it was something I wanted to try to make myself.  Since I had such a vast collection of cabinet doors leftover from a recent store closing, I had the perfect place to begin this project.

As you can see form the photos above, I cut the cabinet door close to the trim molding with a small circular saw then rounded the top with my jigsaw.

Once I got the shape I was looking for, I painted the cupboard door with a bronze paint by Fusion Mineral Paint. I've been holding onto this small bottle of paint for a long time and surprisingly it has almost dried out. The good part about this paint is that you can add a little water and in no time I rehydrated the paint and painted the door.

The next part was the harder part... I cut a recycled aluminum can in half using a tin snip. I used E6000 glue to attach old hinges to the inside of the can then to the cupboard door. I let the glue dry for a few hours then painted the can to match the door.

When the paint was dry I painted on a little dark glaze so the corners would look darker. Honestly, the bronze paint had its own shading in the corners and I could have easily skipped this step, it didn't make that much difference in the color.

At the top of the planter I added the backing of a door handle for decoration then added a ceramic number to the center.

The color of this cupboard planter turned out beautiful and was very similar to my inspiration piece.

I added faux flowers but you could also drop in a recycled jar and fill it with water for fresh flowers.
