How to Make a DIY Weather Vane
I am just a big copy-cat on this project...
I saw it, I loved it, and I copied it!
I saw the most gorgeous rooster weather vane on Prodigal Pieces Larissa makes the most gorgeous farmhouse projects. You may know her from BEEP her VW dresser that was all over the Internet including on Country Living!
Anyway... Larissa made a gorgeous rooster weather vane and I knew the minute I saw it I needed to make one of my own. Larissa used some very cool products on her metal rooster that actually changed the copper to a patina in a few steps.... go on over and check it out!
My rooster weather vane began life with the leg of a table, a couple of chair spindles and a very rusty rooster. And truth be told I'm not sure if it is a rooster or a chicken but I'm calling it a rooster.
I drilled a hole through the table leg and attached a chair spindle going in each direction. On the ends of each spindle I added a finial that I removed from another piece of furniture I disassembled. I also added a square base to the bottom (top) of the table leg to give it a larger base.
I drilled a hole into the top of the table leg (well actually it is the bottom)... and inserted my rooster.
I painted the rooster with Fusion Mineral Paint Metallics... Copper of course. To get the aged copper patina I sponged on a little bit of another Fusion color called Lily Pond.
I think it did the trick... looks like an authentic patina to me.
I painted the base white and it looks great!
