How to Make Storage From an Antique Crate

       This is a repurposed-repurposed project.
I love it when that happens!

One project with two uses!

It all began with an antique crate for my front stoop.

You can read all about the Stenciled Christmas crate HERE.

Now that Christmas is over I wanted to use this crate for storage and not just wheel it into the garage.

So I brought it inside and flipped it around.

It was just the storage I needed by the front door for blankets and maybe even all the shoes that are always laying around.

But it needed something more... a lid.

I had an old bunk bed rail in my basement so I repurposed it by cutting the two boards it was made from in half.

They were the perfect length and width for the crate.

I set out the boards to form a pallet then glued and nailed down cross boards to form a lid.

(I later discovered that the cross boards were too wide so I had to switch them out for 2 thinner pieces of wood)

The next step was to stencil the front of the crate since it looked a little plain.

I used the buffalo check stencil by Old Sign Stencils to create a very rough and imperfect stencil on the front of the crate.

I actually did the stenciling right there in the hallway, I was not concerned with perfection on this one because the crate itself is so rustic and imperfect.

I added hinges to the lid for easy access.

This storage box can be used all year long for blankets or shoes in the entryway.

The lid is easily removed, the box flipped around and it's back to being the Christmas Tree box on the front porch next year!

In the mean time it's the perfect place to hide the
shoes or extra blankets and yes, you can sit on it too!
