DIY Wooden Herb Garden

An outdoor market sale was on the agenda this weekend and as usual I found a treasure, it didn't start out as a treasure but it sure was!

DIY Wooden Herb Garden Box

Everything at the outdoor market was very inexpensive and priced to go, including this wooden box. I'm not sure what the purpose of this was supposed to be, looks like some kind of mass produced DIY flower box that never happened. The price was right, $3 was about my budget so I brought it home. This is also something you could do by creating your own rectangular box with rails.

When I got home I decided that the wooden rail I bought with this wooden box should be attached. I cut 2 pieces of trim and attached the wooden rail to the top of the box so it would stand up high behind the box.
I painted the wood with raw silk by Fusion Mineral Paint. Raw silk is a great white with grey undertones and looks beautiful on everything. Visit the bold link to find a Fusion Mineral Paint dealer near you.
I wasn't too careful about my paint job because I knew in the end I wanted to distress this box with the electric sander to make it look more rustic.

When the paint dried I stenciled with the HERB stencil from Old Sign Stencils by Funky Junk Interiors. I have many of these stencils and they will not disappoint!  This stencil was just perfect for my box which I decided right about now would be a great place to plant herbs. There are several new stencils in the collection that are perfect for all the gardeners out there.

When the stencil was dry I used Tough Coat to seal the paint on the herb garden box. This will protect the wood from the elements.

A quick trip to the plant store and I had 4 containers of basil to plant in my new herb garden. This was truly an inexpensive trash to treasure project and it couldn't be cuter or more useful!
The whole project took me a little over an hour to make and what was piled up for a quick sale at the outdoor market is now my favorite planter!
