Repairing Cat Scratch Damage on Steps

I am in total need of fixing the cat scratch damage on my basement stairs!

My cat lives in the basement at night and apparently when she is there she likes to use the stairs as her scratching post.
At first we thought it was no big deal. The basement after all is the dumping ground for my craft messes.
But it is starting to look like the stairs may not outlast the 15 year old cat. Update: that cat lived to 23!!

I was trying to think of something to cover the cat scratches that would also keep the cat from ruining the stairs.

At Home Depot I found plastic corner molding for drywall. That's it, just what I needed for this fix!

I stapled it to the sides of the stairs and it totally solved the problem!

Sorry Kitty.... !!

While I was down here I thought the stairs could use a little makeover so I removed the old stair pads, scrubbed the stairs, repainted the stair well then put new carpets on the stairs. Just don't look down there... that is my next project!

At the top of the stairs I made a shelf to hold cleaning items, a basket for grocery bags, and hooks for hanging the broom and mop.

Phew, all cleaned up!

Kitty look at what you started! If you love cat projects then you may be interested in the cat scratching post I made, maybe a little late but she loves it and it works great!
