American Flag Bottle Opener

I've wanted one of these for a long time. 

It seems the bottle opener is always hard to find at our outdoor parties. 

When I saw this great DIY on a friend's blog I knew I had to get to work and finally make one for myself. 

An American flag theme seemed the perfect design for this well used summer essential! 

First of all my inspiration for this project came from Sadie Seasongoods, she made one a while back and she will show you how!

Mine began with an old crate. 

I showed you the stash of old crates I found a few years ago and the island crate organizer I made from them. 

I'm also using this cute bulldog bottle opener I had in my kitchen before the new renovation. 

Today, I'm using just one crate and removing the front of the box. 

I cut the front of the box to make it a bit narrower then nailed it to the front of the crate. 

This is a simple project that can be done with any wooden box and scrap wood. 

Next, I painted the box with a quick coat of white craft paint. 

I let the white dry then ran a length of painter's tape around the outside of the box. 

I painted around the painter's tape with red craft paint and let it dry. 

When I removed the painter's tape I had the perfect red and white stripes! 

I painted the front of the box blue and gave the inside another coat of white. 

When the blue dried I used my favorite stars and stripes stencil pack to easily add the perfect stars. 

Lastly, I added my bulldog bottle opener to the inside of the box. 

I gave the box a quick distressing with sandpaper and I was done! 

This is the cutest bottle opener box for the summer and it works great! 

Just pop the top and it lands in the box below! 

My house is vinyl sided so I can't mount it to the side of the house so my plan is to attach it to a board and zip tie it to my deck railing for the summer!
