Rustic Wooden Christmas Stockings
I've adored rustic wooden Christmas stockings hanging on the mantel since the minute I saw them.
They are chippy and simple and neutral and wonderful.
Recently I was inspired by the beautiful wooden stockings made by Lindsay at My Creative Days. She has a whole mantel full of beautiful white stockings among other fantastic projects. As a matter of fact, I just noticed they are the cover of Farmhouse Christmas magazine!
Today I'm giving them a try with my own spin! ...
I began with a piece of thin plywood I had in my workshop. I didn't even know it was there until I began looking for wood to make these. The thin plywood was the perfect thing!

First I drew a stocking shape onto paper then I used a jigsaw to cut out the shape onto the wood.
I made 2 long stockings and 2 short ones then I sanded all the edges.
The first coat of paint was called Little Lamb by Fusion Mineral Paint. It is a beautiful soft grey.
When the first coat dried I roughly painted Raw Silk, also by Fusion Mineral Paint over the grey. I went in several different directions and left quite a bit of the grey showing.
This paint treatment left the stockings with a distressed look with no sanding. You could if you want to sand slightly around the edges.
I drilled a 3/4" hole in the top corner of each of the stockings then sanded the hole. I used torn drop cloth fabric ties to hang the stockings.
Next, I added a small snowflake and wreath stencil to 2 of the stockings. I used the Lamb's Ear grey again for this.
They look great hanging in a set or just one.
I'm not sure where I'm going to hang them just yet, my fireplace has a wood burning stove that makes it difficult to hang anything near it.
Last year I made a similar fabric stocking with the same shape and hung it on the board and batten hooks in my entryway.
You can add a little greenery, a bow, pinecones or just leave them simple. I think I like the greenery with the pinecones!!
